Digital Media’s Role on Younger Generations

Hello everyone!

The vlog that you are about to watch talks about the role that digital media plays on younger generations today. With an ever-changing digital society, there is always controversy about how digital media impacts younger generations both mentally and physically. Digital media is basically any form of media that can be created, viewed, and shared amongst people. The reasoning behind why digital media has become so controversial amongst younger generations is because it is so often used. According to information from the Pew Research Center, around 97% of teenagers today say they use the internet daily.

Digital media can have both negative and positive effects on younger generations. When looking at the negative effects, poor sleep, high blood pressure, and obesity are just a few things that can be associated with too much screen time according to the National Library of Medicine. Another issue that gets brought up is the lack of privacy. Many of today’s youth share their locations and their personal information online for everyone to see which can be dangerous.

While there are many negative impacts of too much media consumption for younger generations, there are a lot of benefits. According to another study done by the Pew Research Center, 8 in 10 teenagers said that “what they see on social media makes them feel more connected to what’s going on in their friends’ lives”. Social media can be a great resource to stay connected with family and friends. There are also great educational opportunities that come with different forms of digital media. TikTok for example provides great learning videos for younger kids and for young adults.

The overall concept to understand from this vlog is that digital media can have both positive and negative effects on younger generations and while parents should regulate how much media their children are able to consume, it should still be used as a resource for staying connected with people and for educational purposes.
